Article explains the difference between DELETE and DISSOLVE commands in Primavera 6. Helps user to use appropriate command to remove an activity.

“Hi Ravi, back to office?” Teja, my manager is happy to see me back to office.
Not because it is Monday, but because he knows that I have finished my Primavera training for which he recommended me.
“Good to know that you liked it very well”, I know he was referring my daily update about training.
He continued, “Check your mail for the project schedule in excel, you have to create it in Primavera”.

I know, its time to demonstrate what I learned through hands-on training. I am on to it.

I heard him “Hi Ravi, how is it going”, I know he is curious to know how far I am in creating schedule.
Seeing it almost done, he responded, “it is quite good”, and scrolled down to see hundreds of activities listed.
Added “and impressive”, by seeing the dependencies between activities looking better than earlier format.

“How easy it is for you to reassign the dependencies if I say to delete one activity that has got many predecessors and successors”.

I know what his intention by asking this question, with smile I replied “Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE”.
“Meaning?” he wanted to know more.
“Hmm.. Let me explain”, I started.

DELETE:

Here is a simple example that shows how the DELETE works.

=> Activity 1, 2 Day duration, no dependency
=> Activity 2, 2 Day duration, dependent on Activity 1
=> Activity 3, 1 Day duration, dependent on Activity 2

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 1

Selected Activity 2 and clicked top menu Edit => Delete as shown in below screen

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 2

Now the Activity 2 got deleted, but there is no relationship between Activity 1 and Activity 3. Along with Activity 2, the dependencies also got deleted.

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 3

In case user wants the system to associate predecessors and successors automatically when one other activity is removed, then DELETE command will not work as expected.

DISSOLVE:

Here is a simple example that shows how the DISSOLVE works.

=> Activity 1, 2 Day duration, no dependency
=> Activity 2, 2 Day duration, dependent on Activity 1
=> Activity 3, 1 Day duration, dependent on Activity 2

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 4

Selected Activity 2 and clicked top menu Edit => Dissolve as shown in below screen

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 5

Now the Activity 2 got Dissolved, but there is a relationship created between Activity 1 & Activity 3.

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 6

“Interesting!!” he said by seeing both examples next to each other.

Why DELETE when you can DISSOLVE 7

“Good Job Ravi, you proved that I am right about nominating you to primavera training”.
I couldn’t make out from his peculiar smile whether he is testing me or he is happy about the knowledge I gained.
